All information about FASTag.

What is FASTag?
To reduce vehicular traffic at the toll plaza, the Government of India (GOI) has mandated all toll plazas, All India, to make toll payments electronic by 01 December 2019.  With this order, all vehicles traveling to and from the toll plaza must compulsorily pay toll charges using FASTag.

The use of FASTag is very simple, a reusable tag that automatically reimburses the toll charges and allows you to pass through the toll plaza non-stop for cash transactions.  FASTag is linked to a prepaid account from which the applicable toll amount is deducted.  The tag is made of radio-frequency identification (RFID) technology and is affixed to the vehicle's windscreen after the tag account is activated.

FASTag is the perfect solution for hassle free travel on national highways.  FASTag is currently active in 407 toll plazas on national and state highways.  In the future, more toll plazas will be brought under the Fastag program.

How long has the government been implementing FASTag?
NHAI preparations have started.  It currently has a total of 537 toll plazas in its network.  Except 17 of them, the remaining toll plaza lanes will be equipped with FASTag by 30 November.  Other toll plazas are still being built.  Because of this, the facility of payment of toll tax electronically has not been introduced.

FASTag will be given free of charge for all vehicles including trucks, cars, jeeps by 1 December.  It is being given free at 50 petrol pumps of Delhi NCR.  According to Union Road Transport and State Road Minister Nitin Gadkari, this FASTag can also be used to take fuel from airports, shopping malls, petrol pumps.  This facility has been introduced at Hyderabad Airport.  Apart from this, FASTag can also get a significant discount by paying a parking fee and filling petrol or diesel.  Only 7 lakh FASTag were issued in 2017 whereas currently 66 lakh 19 thousand fast tags have been issued.

Will there be double toll tax from next month?
The government has decided that next month, vehicles that do not have FASTag will have to pay twice the toll for the electronic toll lane.  At that time every lane will be electronic for which FASTag will be required.
